We've got some bad news for those attendees who were attending the Philly F/M Fest screening of Bob and the Monster.  Due to a few family emergencies, Bob Forrest and Director Keirda Bahruth are unable to attend and had to cancel their appearance on short notice.  Don't fret though, the movie is a must see and for those who bought advance tickets to the screening, we've got some complimentary beer waiting for you.

…And then there were two. Two more days until the film and music fest we’ve been waiting for all summer, that is! The festival kicks off this Thursday, and our own Philadelphia Slick will be blowing your mind opening night. Slick rhymes, funky bass, and jazzy (live!!) horns are what I love about this group.

Philadelphia Slick is nowhere close to some guy spitting over a thrown-together GarageBand beat, this group has real talent. Noesis has been rapping for over thirteen years, and it definitely shows in his lyricism. In their track “Daily Dose,” off the 2010 CD Everything’s Game, lyrics include “Depending on the effect I’m down with the cause/ I just get a little tired of the yes yes yalls.” I’ve already bought their CDs Culture Industry (2007) and Oil (2009), and I suggest you get on it ASAP. Philadelphia Slick’s bassist, Mike, holds down the groove without being overbearing. If you’re looking for an upbeat, crazy show, Philadelphia Slick brings the flow (and then some).

Check them out at the Skybox (2424 E. York) on September 22nd from 10 to 1 am for only ten bucks!

The fine folks from Heineken are setting up shop during our festival this year!  That's right, they'll have a great lounge area for badge holders to kick back and enjoy some cold ones at both the Opening Party @ The Skybox at 2424 Studios on Thursday 9/22 (feat. the sounds of Philly Slick), Friday 9/23 ( during the "Our Band Could Be Your Life" tribute) and Saturday 9/24 (with a full blown performance by "El Malito"). Come on out and enjoy the sounds, meet other festival goers and enjoy the beverages provided by Heineken.  And don't forget, you can find the Heineken Haus again on Sunday 9/25 at the Ukie Club Philly F/M Sunday BBQ event.

Don't worry, the folks at Heineken won't require you to grow a fancy moustache, but it's highly encouraged!

With about twenty days left until the festival, things are getting pretty busy around here. This week, we profile Hub City Stompers. Hailing from New Brunswick, New Jersey, this band redefines the ska/punk genre. With song titles like, “Bridge Over Troubled Squatter,” “Ska Train to Dorkville,” and “WholottaMulatto,” Hub City Stompers is definitely a must-see.

The band’s upbeat ska and reggae sounds will get you grooving. Hub City Stompers don’t follow the typical ska/punk/hardcore formula that most bands these days tend to fall into. Their songs are different, and the lyrics are hilarious. In “Skins Don’t Cry,” an excellent ska rendition of the Cure’s “Boys Don’t Cry,” lyrics include, “I would break a bottle on my head if it would curb my shame/but I say why bother?/I’m so loaded I forget your name.” Fun times, right? The band’s tenor sax and vocalist, Jenny Whiskey, really breaks up this male-dominated genre. If you’re sick of the same old formulaic ska/punk sound, Hub City Stompers will renew your faith in the scene.

Let’s get a good ol’ fashioned skank pit going! Check them out September 23rd at the Fire (412 W. Girard Avenue) from 12:30-1:15am.

If you couldn’t make it to the Piazza last night for the Philly F/M Fest preview, you missed out big time. Last night I fell madly in love with Philly’s own Nicos Gun and their seriously fun party music. This band will get you grooving to every song with funky beats and deliciously heavy keyboards.

Nicos Gun played an energetic show that got everyone dancing. Even their rendition of Blondie’s “Heart of Glass” couldn’t be more spot-on. Singer and guitarist Barney Cortez has the perfect pitch for the band’s dance/punk sound. Not surprisingly, this band has some serious talent behind it. Drummer Harry Zelnick actually won a Grammy at 17 for his work with Ludacris. Additionally, Cortez has collaborated on guitar with the Roots. Nicos Gun doesn’t sound like anything else out today, and their track “Party Cult” is sure to get your pulse pumping. You can download eleven tracks by Nicos Gun for only 5 bucks (already in my iTunes) from their website www.nicosgun.com.

Don’t miss Nicos Gun at the Sunday BBQ on September 25th at the Ukie Club Field Stage from 3:00 to 3:30 for $35. Make sure to bring a belt because you WILL dance your pants off!

If you’re like me, crossing off each day until the music and film variety show of the year, you know there are only thirty days left! As the festival approaches, we turn our attention to the west coast with Portland’s own Viva Voce. This duo has been tearing up stages worldwide for over ten years.

Pairing eerie vocals with impeccable guitar harmonies, Viva Voce’s sound is entirely unmatched. Some tracks (“Plastic Radio,” off their new album The Future Will Destroy You) couldn’t get any funkier, whereas others take you straight to the 60’s with psychedelic grooves and thick vocal harmonies. If all that isn’t enough to get your attention, Viva Voce flawlessly employs southern rock undertones as the foundation for guitar solos, making for a totally unique sound. Each track has a different vibe, but even after all these years the band keeps it together with consistently solid songwriting. Viva Voce’s song “Believer” recently caught the attention of millions with a spot on the CW’s hit show Vampire Diaries. I can’t say I’m into the whole vampire thing, but the song really does the job as a haunting backdrop to a vicious bloodsucking scene (YouTube it, seriously).

Put Viva Voce on your list of bands not to miss at this year’s Film and Music Festival. Check them out on September 25th at the Ukie Club Field Stage (847 N. Frankford) from 5:00 to 5:30 for $35.

Time to polish off your dancing shoes Philly, the highly anticipated Film and Music Festival is officially less than forty days away. In preparation for this four day affair, I will profile the diverse bands and films so you know just what you’re getting into. This week we start locally with the Philadelphia based indie pop band, Creeping Weeds. They have been on the scene for about five years and released a CD, entitled See Through, earlier this year. This five piece band seamlessly layers its guitars, vocals, keyboards, and bass to create ethereal songs you can’t help but tap your foot to.

Rhythmically, Creeping Weeds’ songs flow effortlessly from delicate verses to intricately fast paced sing-along choruses. The eighth track off their new CD, “Greetings from SLO,” is probably the greatest example of the band’s complex beat transitions. Deeply woven acoustic and electric guitars naturally build up to a deliberately paced, vocal harmony driven verse. What’s most interesting about Creeping Weeds is how each instrument mirrors one another in different parts of the song. A keyboard melody heard at the beginning of a track may be followed by a vocal rendition later on in the chorus. This band transcends time, and has a refreshing sound that will keep you moving throughout their set.

Be sure to stop by during their show at Kung Fu Necktie (1248 N. Front St.) from 8:15 to 9:00 on September 24th, it’s an eight dollar investment you definitely won’t regret. Keep up-to-date with the festival on Twitter @phillyfmfest and remember to check in to this blog to learn more about the assorted artists and films in this year’s festival.

Riot Fest East is also one day of the 2nd annual Philly F/M Festival: "A Four Day Event To Promote Music and Film In The City of Brotherly Love To Occur Thursday, Sept 22nd - Sunday, Sept 25th 2011."

The second annual festival will take place over four days, largely in the Fishtown / Northern Liberties neighborhoods of Philadelphia, which in recent years have become a cultural center for music and arts in the city. This year's festival will feature over 15 indoor and outdoor venues with capacities between 100-5,000. Participating venues include: The Festival Pier, Trocadero Theater, TLA, World Café Live and The Ukie Club.

Modeled after successful long-standing events such as SXSW and CMJ, Philly F/M looks to establish itself as the premiere multi-venue music and film festival for the U.S. East Coast entertainment and tourism market. Last year's festival took place in 30 venues with 300 artists and over 60 films from around the world. Philly F/M 2010 attracted 13,000 visitors across all events with little or no "headline" artists. This year the festival will host at least fifteen 'headline-level' artists of all music genres, more than 100 artists total. Attendance projections for the festival is more than 25,000 paid attendees, which will include a core group of at least 5,000 all-access badge holders.
